The purpose of the Academic Program at SPCHS is to prepare our students for the demands that they will face when they complete their high school course of studies and proceed to the next phase of their education….understanding that not every student will be attending a college right out of high school. It is essential that SPCHS prepare all of its students for whatever path they choose to follow after graduation.
St. Petersburg Catholic has a rich tradition in its demanding academic program at the College Prep (CP), Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment levels of instruction. Students who enroll at SPCHS are placed in CP classes as a standard and then upon further evaluation may be placed in Honors courses and may select AP or Dual Enrollment courses as they progress through their high school years. Students completing CP courses earn standard quality points of 1, 2, 3, 4, depending on the final semester grade, whereas students completing Honors courses earn 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 or 4.5 and those completing AP or Dual Enrollment courses earn 2, 3, 4 or 5 quality points depending on their final grade each semester.
High school courses are based on the semester system just like college courses where students are taught specific curricular concepts in the first semester; complete an exam covering those concepts and then earn a grade for that semester. The same procedure is then used for the second semester of that academic year. GPA’s are based on the final grades earned for each semester of their high school years.
In addition to the standard courses offered at the high school level, SPCHS offers a varied curriculum of elective courses, including guitar, introduction to medical studies, psychology, introduction to engineering, and introduction to business. SPCHS prides itself on its fine arts program, especially in this time when schools across the nation are removing their fine arts offerings. Not every student thrives in a pure core academic program. Students need the opportunity to explore the fine, practical and performing arts as well as extended foreign language offerings.
Based on performance in their courses of study, students may earn academic awards and academic letters throughout their years at SPCHS. In this way, students can work to achieve recognition for their academic prowess. SPCHS is a well-rounded college preparatory school with a course of study that attempts to meet the needs of all of its students.
